The UN fact finding mission investigating the July-August unrest last year will reveal its findings on Thursday noon at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, sources have said.
UN investigators have learnt the ousted Awami League government directly instigated the violence against peaceful anti-fascist demonstrators, and was also involved in crimes against humanity during the countrywide protests.
This would be the first UN-led probe into criminal incidents in Bangladesh.
The 150-page report provides recommendations for avoiding any repetition of such kind of violence in the future. The Bangladesh government is not obliged to follow the recommendations, but it can use the report as credible evidence in trials against the Awami League fascist members.
In the last week of January, the UN team sent its final draft to the interim government for feedback and the government gave its response in the same week.
The UN fact finding team has based its report on the videos and other evidences provided by the government, and UN-conducted interviews. Many of the evidences were simply people’s statements, and incomplete data, for which the UN has asked the government to further investigate relevant incidents.
